Belonging to the Phocidae family, the elephant seal is easily recognizable thanks to the nasal protuberance in the shape of a trunk which the males have, protuberance at the origin of their name. There is within this species, a very important sexual dimorphism with males being 3 to 4 times more imposing than females. In fact, they can measure up to 6m for a weight of up to 4 tonnes when a female will only measure 2.50m for 500kg.
