What is the ABEC standard? ABEC is a set of tolerance standards for the production of ball bearings. They were developed by the American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA). Five tolerance classes have been distinguished: 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 (from highest to lowest). This means that the higher the number, the more precisely the bearing is manufactured. Individual bearing parameters are achieved first by segregating the balls, inner and outer rings, and finally by applying lubricant. In fact, it's difficult to say that an ABEC 9 bearing is generally better than one with the number 5. An ABEC 5 bearing was created with a specific application in a given model of inline skates in mind (usually recreational skating), while type 3 bearings, for example, are primarily offered in children's inline skates.
