Apply steady pressure while drawing the tool along the length of the groove, pulling the tool towards you. Repeat in overlapping passes for best results. To adjust the blade position, gently tap the back of the blade to remove it from the wooden body, then, ensuring the bevel faces towards the back of the plane body, place the blade back into the plane with the cutting edge slightly higher than desired, gently tapping the blade into place, ensuring it is seated correctly, with the cutting edge square with the foot of the plane, before gently tapping the top of the blade so that the cutting edge protrudes as desired.
