M20x1.5 HSS Straight Flute Tap Set

This set includes 2 high speed steel (HSS) straight flute taps in metric thread size M20x1.5. Each tap is precision ground to ISO 2857-1 standard with thread tolerance grade 0.014 mm. Total length: 160 mm; chamfer length (lead): approx. 12 mm; shank diameter: 12 mm; weight per piece: ~185 g. Made from M2 tool steel (AISI M2 equivalent), heat treated for hardness HRC 62–64. Designed for through-hole tapping in ferrous and non-ferrous materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, rubber and wood. The set comprises two complementary taps: a 'taper tap' (first cone) with a gradual 7–10 thread chamfer for accurate alignment and initial thread forming; and a 'plug tap' (second cone) with shorter chamfer (3–5 threads) for finishing, deburring and achieving full thread depth — especially effective for bottoming applications in blind holes. The polished lead section ensures smooth entry and perpendicular start, reducing cross-threading risk. Both taps feature straight flutes for efficient chip removal in manual hand tapping with T-handle or adjustable wrench. Ideal for maintenance workshops, fabrication shops and DIY metalworking where reliable, repeatable metric threading is required. Use with cutting fluid (e.g., sulphurised mineral oil) for best results in steel; light oil or beeswax suffices for aluminium or wood. Always secure workpiece firmly and verify tap perpendicularity during first 3–4 turns using visual check or square.
