The Detector at a Glance This logarithmic RF power detector offers a practical way to measure signal strength across a wide frequency range. Built around the AD8317 chip, it converts incoming RF signals into a DC voltage output, giving you a clear electrical reading that reflects the power of the signal being detected. The unit operates from 1 MHz up to 10 GHz, making it a versatile tool for a broad spectrum of radio frequency work. How It Works The detector responds to the amplitude of an RF signal, producing an output voltage that is proportional to the logarithm of the input signal level. This logarithmic response is particularly useful because it allows the detector to handle a wide dynamic range without losing resolution at either end of the scale. The device can extend the detectable dynamic range by 55 dB, meaning it can pick up both very weak and relatively strong signals while maintaining a usable output. It is capable of detecting RF power levels from -55 dBm up to 0 dBm and converting that into a corresponding DC voltage. Practical Applications This module is well suited to a variety of RF measurement tasks. You can use it for general RF signal detection, monitoring signal power, or assessing ambient field strength in a given area. It also works well as a building block within larger systems, such as automatic gain control or automatic level control circuits, where a reliable DC representation of signal strength is needed.
