The AMG8833 Infrared Thermal Sensor Array This compact module brings thermal imaging capability to your electronics projects. Built around the AMG8833 8x8 infrared sensor array, it measures temperatures from 0°C to 80°C with an accuracy of ±2.5°C. The sensor can detect a person from up to 7 metres away and operates at a maximum frame rate of 10 Hz, making it well suited for building your own personal temperature detector or a mini thermal imaging camera. How the Sensor Works The AMG8833 is the next generation of thermal 8x8 IR sensors, offering improved performance over its predecessor, the AMG8831. It returns an array of 64 individual infrared temperature readings over the I2C interface, giving you a complete thermal picture of the area in view. The sensor includes a configurable interrupt pin that can be triggered when a single pixel exceeds or falls below a threshold you set, allowing for efficient event-driven monitoring in your projects. Easy Integration with Microcontrollers The breakout board is designed for straightforward connection to your microcontroller. It communicates via I2C, and example code is available for use with compatible devices as well as for single-board computers running Python. On the Raspberry Pi, the 8x8 grid can be interpolated with image processing support from the SciPy Python library to produce smoother thermal images. This makes the module a practical choice for hobbyists and developers looking to add thermal sensing to their builds without complex setup.
